It's really easy to get involved

Beach Buddies makes it very simple to get involved in beach cleaning. We hold events every week of the year, and special events for any groups, clubs, Scouts, schools, Guides, companies who want to “make a difference” to the beaches and protect wildlife.

The equipment is very simple – a litterpicker, a bin bag, a pair of gloves – and a human being!

We provide all the equipment and always give a safety talk beforehand, especially for younger volunteers, and Beach Buddies removes all materials collected, and recycle as much as possible. Beach Buddies has full public liability insurance and also has numerous Risk Assessments, all available on request.

Families are particularly welcome, and we are keen to encourage as many groups and clubs as possible to take part for an hour, or longer if you get hooked!

Our sessions are normally 90 minutes, at weekends. But there are no obligations, no need to register – just turn up and enjoy being involved. Even if you can only help for a few minutes, it is very much appreciated. Beach cleaning is for all ages and abilities, and we anyone and everyone.

We also warmly welcome Duke of Edinburgh Award candidates to enjoy Beach Buddies as part of their volunteering commitment.

How to start your own beach cleaning group

Beach Buddies has created a very simple method to clean beaches, which can easily be followed. There are a few basics you need to get organised:

  • Get some friends together, even if it’s just two of you!
  • Choose a beach and collect a few bags of garbage – always use gloves.
  • Take photographs of the beach “before” and “after”.
  • Send the photographs and some words to the local media.
  • Tell people what you have done, using social media.
  • Organise a second event, perhaps somewhere different.
  • Keep statistics of the number of bags of trash you collect.
  • Tell your local authority and local politicians what you have done.
  • Organise another event… tell the media… organise another event…

We would be very happy to come along and help you set up a Beach Buddies volunteer group, and supply some basic equipment to get you started. Contact us by email: [email protected]

A productive day out for your staff ...

BEACH Buddies has been running beach cleaning events for companies for several years, with no limit on the number of people who can take part. We hold the world record for beach cleaning volunteers with 997 on one beach in Ramsey in 2014 !

Events are all supervised by Beach Buddies’ officials, and all equipment is provided, including gloves, litterpickers and bin bags, and we can provide some light refreshments – if required – for events held at certain venues, such as Niarbyl and Brewery Bay.

There is no charge for corporate events, but donations are always very welcome to help cover our costs, and to maintain equipment.

Beach Buddies has appropriate Risk Assessments in place, and also public liability insurance for £2 million.

Beach cleaning for schools ...

A VERY important function we provide is beach cleaning events for schools linked alongside a Powerpoint presentation which is provided in-school prior to students getting involved in a beach cleaning session.

This is a vital part of the work that Beach Buddies does around the Island. Helping children to understand the impact of the careless disposal of rubbish is crucial in trying to change the way we all respect the environment, the wildlife and the earth itself.

Our education programme has been an unprecedented success and is now a fundamental part of the Beach Buddies’ programme, and this free service will continue for the long-term future, in co-operation with the Isle of Man Government Department of Education & Children.
