A NEW Beach Buddies bin is now in place on Laxey promenade, thanks to the generosity of Laxey School. The money to buy the bin was raised through a variety of school activities and was officially launched this week by the school’s “Eco Buddies” who have regular meetings to discuss ideas and projects to benefit the environment, protect wildlife, reduce waste and tackle climate change.
Previous initiatives have included banning all single use plastics from the school; writing to companies to ask them to reduce plastics and replace with biodegradable materials; speaking to all Laxey’s traders to encourage them to stop using single-use plastics; a massive community clean-up in Laxey involving all the teachers and children and another similar event immediately after the flooding problems in November.
The school has now also created a new group called the “Eco Buddies” which includes children of all ages from all classes. Teachers Rebecca Walker and Bronwyn Ward have spearheaded the initiative, and are very impressed by the ideas and desire of the children of all ages to see genuine change in their school, their community and in their own homes.
We are really pleased to see the very first “Eco Buddies” and we hope other schools around the Island (and anywhere else in the world) will follow this great initiative.
We love you Laxey School! And we absolutely love your “Eco Buddies” !!
