Record-breaking week for Beach Buddies
A RECORD number of events has been organised by Beach Buddies over a period of seven days between the end of April and early May.
A total of 21 different events took place, including cleaning beaches, river banks, parks and roadsides, with cruise ship passengers, schools, companies, action groups, families and volunteers taking part all over the Island.
The total is four more than the previous record for seven days, set last year, and included one day with six separate events.
In addition, the 7-day period also included time spent with a video crew making a special feature on the Isle of Man, linked to UNESCO Biosphere, for which Beach Buddies has been a stakeholder partner for several years.
Video was also filmed with 81 Hurtigruten cruise ship passengers cleaning beaches in the Derbyhaven area and later in the day on Ramsey’s northern beaches.
Bill Dale, founder of Beach Buddies said, “This was beyond exceptional and I am so grateful to volunteers who gave their time to help cope with the number of events – this would not have happened without their support.
“We gathered masses of rubbish from all over the Island and we would like to highlight the number of companies and schools who are regular supporters and volunteers for Beach Buddies.
“It was a remarkable seven days and is a wonderful reflection on the Isle of Man and our fantastic community spirit.”
Companies, schools, government departments and groups involved over the period included Hill Robinson, RBS, Appleby, Microgaming, Hurtigruten, The Spring Chicks, Douglas Head Buddies, River Buddies, Buchan School, St John’s School, Scoill Yn Jubilee, Manx Utilities and Grant Thornton.
