THE first event which linked up Beach Buddies with the newly-created “Footpath Friends” turned out to be a significant success at Port Mooar on Sunday.
We had a good number of new faces who came to join us in repairing the Raad ny Foillan footpath route out towards Maughold lighthouse, plus others who took part in beach cleaning for the first time, so it was definitely an idea which worked!
A small landslide some months ago had left a section at the start of the footpath awkward to pass, especially in wet weather when it was really slippery.
So, Footpath Friends has created two brand new steps to make it much easier and safer to pass this section, plus we managed to cut back some overgrown gorse which was partially blocking the footpath a little further along.
We had also intended to cut back an overgrown section with wooden walkway, but someone had “beaten us to it” with a strimmer and made it much easier to use.
Not sure who did this – it may have been DoI or the local authority – but they did a great job, hopefully inspired by the news that “Footpath Friends” was going there.
• If you find a footpath which is overgrown or needs some work to repair please let us know.
• Footpath Friends is a group of volunteers which repairs and maintains our beautiful hiking trails and we carry out work across the Island. We are supported by the Department of Infrastructure.
