THOUSANDS of small pieces of polystyrene are the target this weekend for Beach Buddies, after finding the river and beach at Ballaugh covered following the recent storms.
Volunteers who visit this beach regularly have reported that there are also huge numbers of nurdles – the tiny pieces of micro plastics which are commonplace elsewhere, but not often found on Manx shores. The nurdles stretch for a long distance amongst the Ballaugh sand dunes.
So, we are looking for volunteers who may have waders or – better still – chest waders to remove the polystyrene from the river estuary. We will supply nets to collect the items and also sieves for the nurdles.
There is also a lot of the more “usual” types of rubbish – we have seen a lot of plastic bottles and other plastic items strewn along the beach, so everyone will be busy!
The session takes place on Sunday morning (March 1st) from 10.30am to 12 noon. Please park politely not to block the road for local residents.
