BEACH Buddies has condemned the fly tipping discovered at Eairy Cushlin as an “insult to the Manx nation”.
Founder Bill Dale said the dumping of what appears to be rubbish from building work is “totally unacceptable” in today’s environment where the Isle of Man is being portrayed around the world as a nation where we all care about the environment and the Island we love.
He said, “I have spent a lot of time in recent years speaking to countries around the world and singing the praises about what the Isle of Man has achieved in terms of caring for the environment, wildlife and nature. Imagine what these countries think when they see that we still have idiots dumping rubbish at the roadside like this, especially in such a beautiful place as Eairy Cushlin.
“Personally, I hope that the authorities find out who did this and that they are taken to court and the judiciary imposes the absolute maximum penalty. This is absolutely unforgivable, totally unacceptable and an insult to the Manx people and the Manx nation.”
He also answered suggestions made on social media that fly-tipping is happening because the civic amenity sites are closed during the current lockdown.
“We have to ask why are the Island’s civic amenity sites closed at the moment? I don’t see any plausible reason for the sites to be closed. Even in normal times the people who visit the civic amenity sites are not standing close to each other, and they are certainly a considerable distance further apart than standing in a supermarket queue, so social distancing is clearly not an issue.
“So, why are the sites closed, and why do they close down every time we go into lockdown? It doesn’t make sense and I urge the government to look at this again as a matter of urgency. However, the closure of the sites is absolutely no excuse for fly tipping. Anyone who dumps rubbish like this at Eairy Cushlin – or anywhere – needs to understand that the rest of us find this totally unacceptable.”
